Your opportunity:

 

The Pardee (www.pardeelab.org) at the University of Toronto is seeking a laboratory technician with expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry. We seek to impact human health by developing portable, affordable tools using the principles of synthetic biology.

 

The group offers a collaborative mission-driven environment with diverse expertise and methods. The lab uses molecular engineering to develop de-centralized technologies for health care, agriculture, and national security applications. The group also includes expertise in electro- mechanical engineering, fluidics, and software development. The resulting devices are designed as companion tools for molecular sensing and biosynthesis.

 

As a Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for preparing common buffers, solutions, stocks, agar plates, and other materials; preparing biological materials like competent cells, cell lysate, etc.; washing/autoclave plastics, glassware, waste and organizing the lab for optimal workflow; following Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines for disposing laboratory waste; maintaining laboratory inventory and placing orders for common supplies, reagents, consumables, and small equipment as needed by lab members; following up with lab members regarding required safety training based on updates provided by the lab manager; coordinating and maintaining records of weekly lab meetings; and, assisting the laboratory manager with preparation and coordination of the annual chemical safety and emergency procedures refresher for lab members.

 

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual who would like to gain essential skills and valuable experiences for careers in biotechnology and molecular biology. The individual will need to have strong critical thinking skills, the ability to work in a team, be proactive and organized, and would enjoy supporting research dedicated to improving the accessibility of health care are encouraged to apply.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for research projects and/or experiments
  • Maintaining inventory of glass and dishware, workstations, chemicals and/or apparatus within the lab
  • Ordering supplies with approval
  • Troubleshooting routine equipment issues during lab sessions
  • Providing orientation to others on work procedures and practices
  • Maintain equipment in proper working order and maintain a clean work area
  • Organize equipment repairs and organize general lab cleaning twice a year
  • Analyzing new equipment and/or reagents and recommending upgrades

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in molecular biology and/or biochemistry, or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum two years of experience working in a wet lab
  • Practical experience in aseptic handling and molecular techniques
  • Experience with the maintenance of a laboratory and laboratory equipment, including troubleshooting laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and SharePoint
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to implement new/optimized procedures

 

Assets (Nonessential):

 

  • MSc in Molecular Biology is considered an asset
  • 1 year of experience working as a laboratory technician in a research lab, is preferred
