Course number and title: GLA2090H:The Role of Social Entrepreneurship in the Global Economy 

 

Course Description: 

This course explores the growing role of triple bottom line businesses that seek to advance the well-being of people and planet. Social entrepreneurs innovate to address complex social and environmental challenges: the climate emergency, poverty, healthcare, and humanitarian aid, to name a few. Through hands on exercises, case studies, guest lectures, and readings we will explore multiple questions: 

  • How do successful social entrepreneurs leverage social innovation to help achieve long-term, sustainable change?
  • What are the business models underpinning social enterprises? How do we measure success?
  • How do social enterprises interact with existing private, public, and nonprofit sectors to achieve impact?
  • What are the limitations of social entrepreneurship?

Class schedule: Thursday 2-4pm

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2025- December 31, 2025

 

Salary:

 

Sessional Lecturer I - $9,820.70

Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term -$10,510.04 

Sessional Lecturer II - $10,510.04 

Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term - $10,760.28 

Sessional Lecturer III - $10,760.28 

Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term - $11,030.36 

 

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Graduate degree in urban studies or planning. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Previous teaching and professional experience in this field. 

 

Description of duties: Developing the syllabus, teaching one 2-hour lecture per week at the graduate level, providing weekly office hours for academic counseling of students, preparing and delivering course material; preparing and delivering assignments and tests; marking student work and submitting grades.
