Your opportunity:

The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences is an academic unit that includes mathematics, computer science and applied statistics. The administrative team works collaboratively to meet the needs of faculty, students, sessional instructors, and teaching assistants.
As the department’s Financial Officer, you will be regarded as the financial expert andoffer assistance and information on all aspects of finance, budgeting, financial systems and accounting. You will ensure that all financial matters comply with University policies and practices as well as those of the granting agencies. You will be integral in planning, forecasting, reporting and preparing financial analysis/reports to support decision making and the implementation of financial decisions.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Forecastingand planning financial activities incorporating budgets with multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries
  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
  • Applying the generally accepted accounting principles to financial tasks
  • Processing expense reimbursements
  • Ensuring research sponsor deadlines are met
  • Analyzing information and making recommendations to inform budgetary decision making
  • Keeping well-informedon purchasing and/or procurement policies and procedures
  • Keeping well-informed on changes to policies, procedures, collective agreements, and applicable legislated requirements

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, commerce, business or a related field with a specialization in accounting or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years work experience in an financial position.
  • Experience in budgeting and analysis, interpreting and applying policies, processing financial transactions, generating financial reports from a financial system, reconciling financial information, and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advanced financial accounting, business finance, auditing and controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply accounting and budgeting knowledge to effectively resolve financial issues, analyze financial information, identify pertinent issues and communicate financial information to individuals with little financial experience.
  • Experience implementing agreements/contracts and interpreting and applying policies, guidelines and procedures, including collective agreements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financialinformation systems, preference in SAP.
  • Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet applications, word processing software and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent ability to prioritize and bring the appropriate sense of urgency to situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, tact and initiative.
  • Excellent time management skills and proven ability to recognize and handle confidential matters.
  • Ability to work well with others as well as independently.


Assets (Nonessential):

 

  • Knowledge of the University's Financial Information System (SAP) and/or budgeting and financial policies and procedures an asset.
