Your opportunity:
Under the general direction of the Assistant Director Clinical Operations, Health & Counselling Centre, (with clinical oversight by the Medical Director) the Lead Nurse acts in a supervisory role to support and monitor the work of the medical team consisting of registered nurses and mental health care coordinator. The Lead Nurse acts as the point person for PHIPA matters in the day-to-day operations of the clinic, reporting directly to the Medical Director in this capacity. The Lead Nurse assists with medical directives, and is responsible for ensuring the nursing team keeps up to date on new medical protocols, procedures, and equipment maintenance. The incumbent provides supervision and oversight of the case load of students managed by the Mental Health Care Coordinator, and acts as the back-up to this role during absences.
The Lead Nurse handles direct ordering and communication with Peel Public Health on vaccinations, fridge inspections, ordering of required Public Health medications, etc. The incumbent is also responsible for the oversight and coordination of of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training, testing, and supply-ordering.
The Lead Nurse provides nursing care and support for students through direct nursing intervention, the scope of which includes: triaging patients presenting with a variety of medical and mental health needs; offering direct care to illor distressed patients; coordinating referrals and tests ordered by physicians; providing venipuncture, injections, and general first aid; dispensing medications; reviewing test results; assisting physicians during examinations and procedures; and providing health education to patients.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assessing the physical and mental condition of patients to determine medical needs and triaging timing of physician assessments
- Coordinating patient treatment based on need and available resources
- Screening and making referrals to appropriate resources and services
- Providing detailed health information to patients
- Providing initial clinical support and/or counselling to distressed students in crisis and making referrals to appropriate resources
- Following rules and procedural processes related to Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
- Providing orientation to others on work procedures and practices
- Directing a small group in a limited area, including responsibility for scheduling and/or workflow
Essential Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Nursing or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Must be a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum 6-7 years of recent clinical experience, including minimum 1 year of recent supervisory experience.
- Experience in a primary care setting with post-secondary students or emergency room is required
- Must have current BCLS and CPR certification
- Must demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge and skills including physical assessment, strong health teaching and supportive counselling abilities
- Knowledge of the practice of evidence-based nursing in a primary care setting combined with a genuine interest in young adults
- Excellent communication (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills are required
- Strong nursing assessment skills with an ability to triage
- Excellent time management skills, with ability to work well under pressure and tight time lines
- Strong knowledge of the standards of nursing practice and their application to a community practice setting
- Sensitivity to the diversity of the student body, with training in cultural sensitivity
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team are essential
Assets (Nonessential):
- Prior experience with electronic medical records (Accuro preferred)
- Prior experience presenting workshops related to sexual health, contraception, etc
- Prior experience developing written instructions and procedures
- Prior experience with scheduling and determining clinic coverage needs
- Venipuncture skills are an asset

USW Pay Band 18 -- $114,486. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $146,408. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
