Course Number and Title - RLG211H5F - Introduction to Religion, Media, and Popular Culture
Course Description: How does religion shape popular culture? How does popular culture shape religion? This course traces a history of these questions from the early modern period through the twenty-first century by looking at fairs and folk culture; mass broadcast media like radio, film, and television; and the rise of digital culture. Topics covered vary by semester, but could include religious comic books, televangelism, mass-mediated religious violence, online pilgrimage, digital occultism, etc. (24L/12T)

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Religion or closely related discipline. Mastery/competency in the subject area, as related to the course description, is required. Demonstrated effectiveness as an instructor. Previous experience teaching a similar course is desirable.
Description of Duties: Preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; dealing with student inquires; calculation and submission of grades (including any grading or submission of grades not completed by the end of session: December 31, 2025 for the F session and April 30, 2026 for the S); holding regular office hours; supervising TAs (if any) assigned to the course.
