Your opportunity:
Chemical & Physical Sciences (CPS) is an interdisciplinary science department comprising of Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, and Astronomy. Our vibrant research labs examine questions such as how cells are programmed, how proteins function, how we develop materials for human health and a sustainable future, how Earth’s climate and biosphere change over time, how we monitor and predict natural hazards and how students learn to approach these challenges. Our students have access to state-of-the-art teaching laboratories. Additionally, they are involved in cutting-edge research projects in our research labs and have the opportunity to pursue internships at a broad range of technology companies across the GTA. Our department is home to 26 full-time faculty, including award-winning educators and researchers, who supervise a total of 90 graduate students and 16 postdocs in the CPS research labs. About 40% of our faculty have been hired in the last 10 years, the result of a recruitment and renewal drive that is ongoing.
Reporting to the Manager, Teaching Laboratory Operations, the Senior Laboratory and Safety Coordinator position is a unique role aimed at supporting our students in their lab work while ensuring a safe and compliant laboratory environment. The Senior Lab & Safety Coordinator will have a wide range of duties such as overseeing the day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops, creating and implementing procedures to ensure compliance to industry standards and acting as a subject matter expert guiding various stakeholders in safety best practices. The incumbent will also support the Core Instrument Facility as required.

Your responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops
- Editing maintenance and repair manuals for complex scientific apparatus
- Keeping well-informed on current technologies, best practices and industry standards
- Planning and implementing health and safety reviews and audits that support operational objectives
- Monitoring observance of health and safety/security regulations
- Checking that training and/or certifications are current for staff
- Troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations
- Providing safety training and ensuring compliance with lab safety procedures and standards
Essential Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Chemistry or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum five years in Chemistry or Bio Chemistry wet lab.
- Carrying out all experiments to be done by students and documenting the results.
- Collaborate with the course instructor to facilitate grading of student lab reports.
- Ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically with individuals across all levels of the university (i.e. students, lab staff etc.).
- Experience with monitoring and enforcing safety in the labs is required.
- Troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills are essential.
- Previous experience guiding work study students.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain procedures for ensuring safety of students and staff in the lab.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team within a dynamic lab environment.
Assets (Nonessential):
- First Aid CPR, WHMIS, and Bio Safety certification and training
- Experience or training in biochemistry
- Acting as a Subject Matter Expert in Health and Safety
- Keeping up to date with current safety regulations for successful laboratory operations
