Description:
Course number and title: FAH392H5S Topics in Modern Art/Architecture - Contemporary Art and Migrations
Topic description: Focusing on the intersections of visual arts since 1945 and modern migrations in their global social, political, and artistic contexts, we examine representations of diverse migrant experiences in contemporary art practice across various geographies and media, including comic books, video and installation art, performance, conceptual photo practice, documentary and artist films, public art and activist art projects. The works of migrant artists are explored in relation to the broader and intertwined questions of displacement, identity, and coexistence in the global world shaped by colonialism and capitalism, fractured and unstable. Can contemporary migrant art narratives and recent curatorial projects in Europe, US, Canada, and Australia effectively redefine our thinking about citizenship, belonging, and otherness and challenge the heartless spectacle of migrant shame and suffering in social and mass media with a message of solidarity and kindness?
