The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time Limited Term Research Associate with research interests in primary care.

Reporting to Dr. Peter Selby, Vice-Chair Research, the Research Associate will take a leadership role in advancing family medicine through a research project that involves the analysis and environmental scan of existing primary health care research programs to inform the structure and function of a university based research program with faculty distributed across 14 clinical sites. 


Responsibilities will include:


  • Leading and conducting research related to primary care programs
  • Conducting an environmental scan and stakeholder assessment, including benchmarks for impact assessments
  • Evaluating the impact of graduate research education and gaps to further future family medicine research
  • Advising on research methodology to fellow academic and clinical researchers
  • Conducting literature and document reviews that are relevant to primary care research
  • Managing core project deliverables such as papers and reports
  • Analyzing and summarizing findings and drafting reports and/or manuscripts and contributing to knowledge translation activities
  • Supporting the development of grant submissions
  • Collaborating with DFCM researchers in specific methodological areas and developing research protocols
  • Contributing to project knowledge transfer activities and communicating research findings by presenting and participating in webinars, committee meetings and conferences, and contributing to publications as required




The successful candidate must possess an advanced degree (PhD or MD) with five years’ relevant experience in primary care research (e.g. interventional, digital health, health services, education, quality improvement). The successful candidate will have extensive experience with qualitative, quantitative or mixed research methods, in addition to documenting and presenting complex analyses.  Demonstrated experience using RedCap and appropriate statistical/analytical software such as, InVivo, R, SAS, SPSS or similar systems to acquire, manage and analyze data from a wide variety of sources in various formats will be required. The candidate will have experience submitting manuscripts for publications and grants, preparing peer reviewed manuscripts and have demonstrated experience presenting findings at relevant academic conferences.  The ability to work independently and direct projects, while also working collaboratively with the PI and other project team members is essential. Previous experience managing a research group/providing direction to junior researchers is also required.
