The Office of the Vice-Principal Academic and Dean provides leadership in academic programming and services to the campus, ensuring a positive and academically responsive environment to change. Within the broader University community, the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean represents the policies and points of view of U of T Scarborough. Within U of T Scarborough, the Vice-Principal & Dean promotes the teaching, research, and scholarship of the faculty, the career development of the administrative staff, and the overall well-being of students.
Under the general direction of the Manager, Academic HR & Faculty Affairs, the Academic HR and Faculty Development Advisor plays a dual role in supporting the strategic development and implementation of faculty development programming and the delivery of academic human resources services at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). The incumbent contributes to the advancement of a supportive and inclusive academic environment by planning and coordinating initiatives that promote faculty engagement, leadership, and career progression across all career stages. This includes leading the logistical execution of events and programs, developing communication strategies, evaluating outcomes, and coordinating internal funding competitions. In parallel, the Advisor serves as a key resource on Academic HR processes, providing a full range of expert advice and operational support to academic units on policies and procedures related to faculty appointments, searches, academic reviews, salary administration, and leaves. The incumbent also provides technical guidance on the interpretation and application of collective agreements, including those governing CUPE 3902 Units 1, 3, and 5, which cover teaching assistants, sessional lecturers, and postdoctoral fellows. The Advisor works closely with faculty leadership, departmental administrators, Labour Relations, and central university offices to ensure Academic HR matters are handled with consistency, accuracy, and compliance.
The Advisor will also take on new tasks or projects, assume responsibility for ongoing initiatives, and undertake research on a wide variety of issues related to academic human resources at UTSC. The Advisor is responsible for the planning and implementation of projects aimed at improving the campus’s Academic HR processes. The responsibilities of the Advisor will continue to evolve, requiring flexibility and a proactive approach to changing priorities while working collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
The Advisor is expected to exercise initiative, sound judgment, and strong analytical skills in handling inquiries independently or referring them appropriately. As a representative of the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean, the Advisor must exercise a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness, and confidentiality regarding human resources matters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as Education, Human Resources, or a related discipline, is required. A Master’s degree or formal training in Adult Education, Organizational Development, or a related area is an asset, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years of professional experience in a postsecondary or related setting, with demonstrated expertise in faculty professional development and academic human resources. Experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating educational or professional development programs is required. Strong familiarity with university policies and procedures related to academic appointments (full-time and part-time), tenure, promotion, leaves, and salary administration is essential, as is experience advising on and interpreting Academic HR policies. A thorough understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) frameworks, and the role of human resources and equity within institutional structures, is also required. Experience working with senior faculty leadership (including Chairs and Directors) is strongly preferred. Experience navigating international academic relationships is considered an asset.
- SKILLS: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel functions, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Forms, OneDrive, and SharePoint. Demonstrated ability in research, data analysis, and use of survey tools. Strong oral and written communication skills, analytical thinking, and problem-solving ability. Skilled in event and program coordination. Experience using Zoom and web content management tools; familiarity with online registration systems, data dashboards, or HRIS tools is an asset. Experience with Canva (or other design tools), Drupal, or WordPress is also considered an asset.
- OTHER: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with academic leadership, administrators, and colleagues across units. Demonstrated discretion, initiative, and sound judgment when managing sensitive and confidential matters. Able to work independently in a dynamic environment with competing priorities. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Comfortable working under pressure and adapting to shifting deadlines. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks. Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
