Position Summary:

 

The Area  Manager, Caretaking is responsible for providing timely, efficient and effective caretaking services to assigned shifts of the St. George campus. Through supervisory of direct reports, oversees the provision of caretaking services (including but not limited to cleaning activities, response to campus community needs and customer concerns, service delivery schedules, waste and recycling collection and employee relations) on assigned shifts on a 24/7 basis. Responsible for interviewing, hiring and training new recruits at the hourly paid and supervisory staff levels, enforcing/maintaining health and safety standards within the department, responding to campus community needs/customer concerns, ensuring service delivery schedules, handling labour relations and attendance awareness issues, and operating within budget guidelines as directed.

 

Qualifications Required:

 

Education:

  • High school graduation plus professional training required.
  • Knowledge of hazardous chemicals related to cleaning, WHMIS regulations, Ontario Health & Safety Act.
  • College diploma or undergraduate degree is considered an asset.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing a large, unionized workforce, preferably in a facility management setting (i.e. institutional caretaking operations and waste/recycling collection) or not-for-profit, or public service organization with responsibility for a budget of not less than $2M.

 

Skills:

 

  • Excellent organizational skills, including a demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure of multiple demands, strict deadlines and frequently changing priorities.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to motivate staff and demonstrate effective leadership.
  • Good presentation skills preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

 

Other:

  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to create charts, graphs and reports from several software programs.
  • Ability to analyze information and create comparable for work loading job assignments.
  • Mathematical aptitude.
