The Department of Geography & Planning in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto (St. George campus) invites applications for a 3-year full-time contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Geographic Data Science with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024.


Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in physical or human geography (or a closely aligned discipline) with a research/teaching focus in Geographic Data Science by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We welcome applications from candidates with an interest in the applications of Geographic Data Science in fields such as transportation, planning, or environmental geography.


We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures in geographic data science, including courses on geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and computer mapping applications. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.


Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be provided by strong letters of reference; teaching awards and accolades; presentations at significant, discipline-relevant conferences; and in a teaching dossier which includes teaching accomplishments; a statement of teaching philosophy; sample course syllabi related to the teaching of Geographic Data Science (and/or GIS); and teaching evaluations.


The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of courses that may include introductory, intermediate, and advanced Geographic Data Science/GIS courses, a fourth-year capstone Geographic Data Science/GIS course, a graduate-level GIS course for non-specialists, and other undergraduate Geographic Data Science courses based on the candidate’s teaching interests and in consultation with the Associate Chair, Undergraduate. While many of our core courses use esri software, other software packages are used where appropriate. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide service within the University and to broader academic and professional communities.


Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
