Description:

The Division of Neurosurgery in the Sprott Department of Surgery at the Toronto Western Hospital (TWH), University Health Network (UHN) and the University of Toronto are inviting applications for the position of an Academic Neurosurgeon with a specific interest and demonstrated training and experience in complex spine surgery and functional neurosurgery. The individual we seek will have advanced training and skills in minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal oncology, and the integration of advanced technologies in spinal cord injury and regenerative medicine and experience in functional neurosurgery through formal fellowship experience. The effective date of this appointment is July 1, 2025.

 

The successful applicant will be managing patients with complex spine and functional conditions, covering specialty spine call and general neurosurgery call, educating neurosurgery trainees, medical students, and other learners, promoting a positive work culture and supportive training environment, prioritizing patient-centered care, and striving for diversity within the community. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required.

 

The successful candidate will be a surgeon-scientist interested in basic and translational research. They must hold an MD degree and certification in Neurosurgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or a recognized equivalent certifying body. The individual must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. All candidates must be proficient in English.

 

A secondary graduate degree is required at the doctoral level (PhD) with a focus on areas such as neuromodulation applications in spinal cord injury, repair or therapeutics. Applicants should demonstrate a track record of commitment to excellence in neurosurgical training, clinical service, and scholarship. The position involves a minimum of 50% time commitment to academic activities focused on research and innovation. The candidate will be eligible for a full-time faculty appointment in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto at the academic rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, aligned with their experience and accomplishments.

 

The primary appointment of the individual will be in the Division of Neurosurgery at Toronto Western Hospital, UHN, which offers an excellent opportunity for career development within an internationally recognized tradition of academic neurosurgery. The Division has a well-established subspecialty practice in vascular, oncology, skull base, spine, functional neurosurgery, and epilepsy, each with a long-standing history of multidisciplinary care in the neurosciences program at the Krembil Brain Institute.

 

Remuneration will be derived from a variety of sources, primarily from fee-for-service clinical billings, and will be commensurate with rank as a member of the clinical faculty, qualifications, and experience. Academic start-up funds will be provided in alignment with the applicant's credentials, experience, and proposed academic vision. A guaranteed salary for protected research time will be offered. Based on the expected clinical workload, the annual compensation for this position is estimated to range between $500,000 and $700,000 CAD, dependent on the individual's clinical workload and responsibilities.
