The University Health Network, Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management and the University of Toronto, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine are seeking a candidate for the R. Fraser Elliott Chair in Cardiac Anesthesia at the University Health Network. The endowed Chair was created through a generous gift of $2,000,000 to the Toronto General and Toronto Western Foundation in 2001. Income earned from the Chair’s endowment fund will be available for the support of research and related scholarly activities. 

 

The successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The Chair’s position is for a 5-year term, with the possibility of renewal for a second 5-year term, following a structured review process. The anticipated start date will be July 1, 2026, or one which is mutually agreed upon.

 

The successful candidate must have a clear, achievable vision for advancement of research in the field of perioperative cardiac anesthesia care. They will be an established clinician-scientist leading a high-impact research program supported by national and international peer-reviewed funding. The candidate will be expected to advance research and education in all aspects of cardiac anesthesia and serve as a mentor to new investigators. The successful candidate will receive protected time for research and scholarly activities.

 

The successful candidate must be able to function proficiently in English and will provide clinical anesthesia care throughout the surgical programs at the Toronto General Hospital site, with a specialized focus in cardiac anesthesia. Clinical supervision and teaching of students, residents, and fellows are expected. On-call services will be provided in rotation. Participation in formal in-house and University teaching programs, as well as administrative duties will be expected.

 

The successful candidate must have a medical degree, postgraduate fellowship training, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Anesthesia (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). They must have proven clinical skills at a high level and a commitment to teaching students, residents, and fellows. Compensation will be through the SHS-UHN Anesthesia Association (a shared practice plan) and will be based in part on fee-for-service billings and commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an anesthesiologist in the Province of Ontario ($400,000-600,000 per annum).
