The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for the position of Associate Vice-Principal Research & Innovation– Research Facilitation & Infrastructure (AVPRI-RFI). The successful candidate’s academic department at UTSC will depend upon their field of expertise and they will be eligible for a full-time tenure stream academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, effective July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter. The AVPRI appointment is for a 5-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second term.
The AVPRI-RFI will be a visionary, inspiring, and passionate enabler of the campus’ strategic research and innovation priorities; champion of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; and the embodiment of integrity, transparency, and accountable stewardship.
The AVPRI-RFI must have: a PhD; a distinguished record of excellence in research and teaching; an established international track record of sustaining and leading innovative and independent research; and maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally-funded research program.
Evidence of research excellence will be demonstrated by: the submitted research statement; a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant scholarly journals or presses or through significant creative activities; a record of presentations at significant conferences; distinguished awards and accolades; and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.
Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through materials such as a strong teaching statement, sample course descriptions/outlines/resources, teaching evaluations, and strong letters of reference.
The AVPRI-RFI will have demonstrated accomplishments as a successful academic administrator and scholar-leader in a research-intensive institution, with evidence of commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment where everyone is valued and supported to thrive.
The AVPRI-RFI will have the ability to drive and facilitate a broad range of individual and collaborative research and creative practice, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary. They will be skilled at engaging collaboratively with internal and external partners and stakeholders. They will have a sophisticated understanding of the research funding landscape, including granting councils, philanthropy, and commercial/industrial partnerships.
Reporting to the Vice-Principal Research & Innovation (VPRI) of UTSC, and working collaboratively within a tri-campus system, the AVPRI-RFI serves as a senior administrative member of an integrated research leadership team, which includes an Associate Vice-Principal Research & Innovation-Strategic Initiatives & Partnerships (AVPRI-SIP), to advance UTSC’s research mission and coordinate research initiatives and support across the UTSC campus.
Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The AVPRI–RFI will be responsible for enhancing and growing established and emerging areas of research strength that will differentiate UTSC as a global research leader in those fields, and developing, implementing, and helping to oversee a new research support framework that facilitates the realization of UTSC’s scholarly ambitions.

Candidates are also asked to submit a 1‐ to 2-page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.
