Description:

Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Department of Emergency Medicine, at St. Michael’s Hospital.  The anticipated start date is May 1, 2025, or as mutually agreed upon. This appointment is for a five-year term renewable upon successful review.

 

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and must be Certified or Examination Eligible in Emergency Medicine, eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, and eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto.

The St. Michael’s Hospital Emergency Department (ED) is a crucial access point for urgent and emergent care, playing a pivotal role in our goal to advance health care excellence through education, research and innovation. With approximately 70,000 visits annually, the ED serves a diverse population and is integral to the hospital’s function as a Level 1 trauma centre. The ED also supports a number of highly specialized regional programs, which include stroke, neurosurgery and STEMI. The ED is committed to providing compassionate, high quality care that prioritizes accessibility, equity, and inclusivity for our communities. The St. Michael’s ED is in the midst of completing a multi-year renovation and expansion.

 

The Department seeks a visionary leader with outstanding administrative and leadership skills, in particular with experience in systems leadership, developing partnerships and providing mentorship and support of academic physicians in career growth, wellness, and change management.  A strong academic track record in research, education, or quality improvement and leadership are required.  The successful candidate will ensure research growth and foster collaborations with the Keenan Research Centre, the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and external partners. Equally important are strong clinical skills and awareness of the unique population served by the hospital, in order to foster excellence in patient care, and continued advocacy for people with social vulnerabilities.
