The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) and Sprott Department of Surgery at University Health Network (UHN) are inviting applications for the position of Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation/ Cardiovascular Surgeon Alfredo & Teresa De Gasperis Chair in the Surgical Management of Heart Failure. Successful applicants will hold, or be eligible for an academic rank of Associate, or Full Professor in the Department of Surgery, Temerity Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. The recruitment package will be supported in part by the Alfredo & Teresa De Gasperis Chair in the Surgical Management of Heart Failure. The effective date of this appointment is flexible, tentatively aiming for July 1, 2023.
The successful candidate will assume a prominent leadership role as the Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant Program and must have broad experience in all aspects of the surgical care of advanced heart failure patients, including ventricular assist devices and mechanical circulatory support. In addition to a requisite track record of exemplary clinical results, the applicant should be a strong academic surgeon and be recognized as an expert in heart transplantation.
The Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation will work closely with the Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program and will be responsible for all clinical, education, and research activities of the heart transplant program. Duties will include all aspects of clinical care of a full-time adult cardiac surgeon, education of cardiac surgery residents and fellows, and expansion of the research and scholarly activities of the cardiac transplant program. Robust opportunities exist to enhance the existing research portfolio through collaboration with an array of clinicians and researchers within the PMCC, including the PMCC Clinical Trials Unit, PMCC Biobank and PMCC AI Team, the Ajmera Transplant Centre, the Sprott Department of Surgery at UHN and across the University of Toronto.
The successful candidate should ideally possess strong leadership skills and a track record of scholarly activity. The appointment at UHN would be for a Surgeon Investigator position. The candidate must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery is comprised of 8 full-time clinical faculty members and offers the entire breadth of cardiac surgery, including reconstructive valve surgery, aortic surgery, advanced heart failure, and adult congenital surgery.
Salary range will be $600,000 – $700,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
