The Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) embraces a holistic philosophy in its delivery of integrated academic advising, learning skills, career development and employment coaching services to students. Your opportunity:

As part of a dynamic Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) team, you will foster students' academic and career development, with a collaborative focus on student success and engagement. This is achieved by embracing a holistic philosophy in the department’s delivery of integrated programs, services and events to our diverse student population. Within the AA&CC, the Career Development and Employment Development (CEED) team supports and engages students and new graduates in their exploration and achievement of career, employment and further education goals. The Career Development and Employment Development team also operates as a collaborative hub of expertise for the campus community in supporting our diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students.

With a student-focused commitment to excellence and innovation, the Career Supports, Team Lead will assist the CEED team in the successful development and delivery of dynamic and high impact programs, services, resources and events for undergraduate and graduate students, and new alumni. You will work collaboratively to strengthening methods of practice and core services, including expanding resources and opportunities for students’ self-directed job search and experiential learning activities with a career development focus. This work is accomplished through the student-focused commitment of staff, and strong collaborations with campus and tri-campus partners.

In your role, you will also provide individual and group career counselling services for undergraduate and graduate students. This entails advising and coaching students on career self-management, decision-making, planning and goal setting. This also includes overseeing the research and development of outcome-oriented career education and experiential learning programming, resources and tools. Your student-focused commitment to fostering a team approach of evidence-based practice, results-orientation, and learning and development will assure that these services and resources are responsive and impactful.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Serving as an expert resource to a group of professionals in the specialty
  • Fostering cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts
  • Assessing needs and contributing to the planning of unit goals and initiatives
  • Keeping well-informed on the research, literature, theory, trends and best practices for post-secondary success
  • Advising students on career-related matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Assessing student psychological need in relation to their individual career development, path/growth
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Creating safe spaces and environments in which individuals may disclose in the course of counselling

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

 

  • Master's Degree in a counselling discipline (e.g. counselling psychology, psychotherapy, social work) or related field (e.g. behavioural sciences, adult education), or an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of career counselling and employment coaching experience in a fast paced post-secondary student affairs/services setting
  • Minimum two (2) years supervising/leading staff in a student services capacity, including student staff, practicum students and interns
  • Proven experience developing, implementing and evaluating student-focused programs, resources and services
  • Demonstrated research experience and the ability to learn and utilize theoretical approaches and best-practices for career counselling and employment coaching, including labour market trends, occupational paths, and selection processes for higher education and employment
  • Experience facilitating highly engaging presentations, group sessions and workshops
  • Knowledge of current labour market conditions and experience in employer/alumni/community partner engagement
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to foster the development of a high-performing team
  • Expertise in developing, implementing and evaluating career development and employment-related programming
  • Sound knowledge of key principles of counselling and processes that lead to change, personal development and successful navigation within the labour market
  • Strong knowledge of career development theories and models, and application of standards for the ethical and legal practice of career counselling
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong client relationship building skills to establish trust and credibility with students, faculty, staff and senior administrators
  • Superb workshop development and facilitations skills with the ability to engage large audiences
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including report writing, as well as strong research and analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention theories and methods and the ability to safely and effectively refer and transition clients in crisis to appropriate support services
  • Well-developed proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook); Student Information Systems; Client management and appointment booking systems
