About Us
The Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which played a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world.
With $76 million in research funding per year, including more than $31.5 million held at DLSPH, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change [response], implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through [and] wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas.
Your Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Dean, the Chief Administrative Officer is entrusted as the principal administrative leader, providing vision, strategic direction and financial and operational management expertise in the achievement of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health’s strategic priorities.
You will oversee a diverse portfolio - namely finance, human resources, space planning and capital projects, risk management and strategic planning – and you will enhance our IT infrastructure and service delivery model to help our School achieve sustainable and scalable growth. Fostering a culture of administrative excellence through inclusiveness and continuous improvement, you will serve as a crucial link between diverse organizational functions across the University, public health units, community health centres and internal and external committees. As a key member of our School’s leadership team, you will provide strategic counsel to the Dean and senior leadership on a broad range of issues, including budget planning, organizational development and resource management. You will be adept at navigating highly complex, decentralized institutions where success is achieved through relationship and influence management. Your record of leading interdisciplinary teams and driving transformational change will help us define a sustainable health system for future generations by enabling our faculty, researchers, and students to achieve their goals.
Essential Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Health or Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience; professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA) considered an asset
- Minimum 10 years’ of progressive leadership experience in a complex decentralized public sector organization or comparable environment
- Demonstrated track record as a strategic business leader in finance and operational management in an organization of similar scale and complexity, overseeing complex budgets, forecasting across multiple funding sources and managing large and diverse administrative units
- Proven experience overseeing an administrative portfolio involving finance, human resources, IT and space management, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery
- Demonstrated experience leading large scale capital redevelopment projects for academic and research purposes, space and technology
- Proven experience leading change and driving results through process evaluation and redesign
- Experience leading, mentoring and supporting the professional development of senior staff
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
- Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal and diplomacy skills, and the ability to build collaborative relationships at all levels with proven ability to exhibit tact and diplomacy in sensitive situations
- Proven ability to make data-driven decisions to optimize resource allocation
- Advanced consulting skills, with the ability to work across the organization to influence decisions for a positive outcome
- Exceptional conflict management and negotiation skills
- Ability to serve as an advisor to leadership, administrative, and academic units, administrators in a manner that generates their attention and respect, facilitates cooperation and achieves consensus
- Highest ethical standards, with a commitment to transparency and accountability
