The Department of Social Justice Education offers a multi and interdisciplinary graduate program developed from the past programs of History and Philosophy of Education as well as Sociology in Education. This department provides students with critical understandings of the social, historical, cultural, political, economic, and ethical contexts of education, broadly conceived. Based on the diverse intellectual traditions of the humanities and social sciences, the department is committed to multi and interdisciplinary studies in education, with a focus on equity and social justice from a variety of perspectives including history, philosophy, sociology and political science.

Your Opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Chair, the Department Manager provides leadership and oversight to daily operations and manages administrative staff to ensure effective service delivery to faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Social Justice Education. Key responsibilities include assisting in the development and execution of strategic plans to align with department goals, financial management, budget planning, forecasting, and financial reporting. Strategic planning around recruitment and program expansion, management of research grant accounts and ensuring compliance with financial policies. Human Resources responsibilities include recruitment, onboarding and management of staff, ensuring compliance with collective agreements and university policies. Operational oversight will include responsibility for space and facilities, information technology and health and safety.  The Department Manager will also assist faculty with research grant applications/funding opportunities. This role is key to implementing academic priorities and managing resources effectively at OISE.


Qualifications:

I.       EDUCATION:

 University Degree or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. 

II.     EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 5 years’ related experience working in a senior administrative role, managing a complex organization preferably in a University environment. Must have a solid understanding of the various complexities and challenges associated with the support of academic and administrative operations. Demonstrated experience with budget modelling, forecasting, and administering accounting practices and principles. Experience managing, leading and motivating staff preferably in a unionized environment.

Demonstrated experience in managing staff in a unionized environment. Experience administering human resources policies, procedures and collective agreements; knowledge of relevant legislation. Experience working with University policy preferred. Ability to assess, evaluate and manage administrative functions. Experience developing administrative procedures and protocols to support operational needs. Experience managing space and facility issues.

III.    SKILLS:

Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication and organizational skills. Knowledge of University’s SAP based Administrative Management Systems (AMS) and related applications (FIS, HRIS) or equivalent. Demonstrated experience liaising with senior administrators, responding to and handling matters of a complex and sensitive nature. Ability to work independently and to perform effectively as a member of a team. Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and deal with people in a clam and effective manner in sometimes sensitive situation and to maintain confidentiality.

IV.   OTHER:

Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills with ability to engage, secure support, commitment and results from others. Ability to make effective presentations; highly developed financial skills; proven  effectiveness in the development of administrative systems. Proven skills in developing and implementing objectives under competing priorities and defined timelines.
