Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) is an award-winning program that provides free legal services to non-profit organizations and low-income Canadians in 20 cities, from coast to coast. For nearly three decades, PBSC has been designing high-quality legal placements and training law student volunteers to help vulnerable Canadians with their essential legal needs. Partnering with courts, community organizations and law firms, we offer innovative, high-impact volunteer opportunities in all areas of the law. Operating in 22 law schools across Canada, PBSC has exposed generations of law students to the value of pro bono service, helping to create a culture of public service in the legal profession. PBSC is considered a national leader in experiential education, and it is the voice of law student pro bono in Canada.

PBSC’s National Office is housed at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law. Reporting to the PBSC Advisory Board and the Assistant Dean, J.D. Program, the incumbent directs all aspects of PBSC, including developing and implementing a strategic vision for the program; managing employees, including hiring and supervising National Office staff and managing the network of PBSC chapters and student staff at law schools across the country; overseeing program finances; managing fundraising and funder relations; developing funding and grant proposals; reporting on grants; building partnerships with key stakeholders, including judges, lawyers, academics, justice sector advocates and community agencies; managing operational processes; overseeing program evaluation and measurement; engaging in current and emerging conversations about access to justice, pro bono, experiential learning and the role of legal education and law student volunteerism; and engaging in profile-raising activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate university degree and law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) required
  • Minimum five years of related senior management experience in a university, public interest, education or legal setting
  • Experience working with post-secondary students; managing program budgets; coordinating volunteers; and managing staff
  • Experience in fundraising, funder management, and funder reporting
  • Familiarity with current issues relating to the public interest sector and pro bono legal work, and knowledge and understanding of the legal community and profession
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong commitment to community advocacy and outreach
  • Capacity to work with and motivate multiple stakeholders
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Fluency in French is an asset
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Excellent research skills
  • Excellent ability to work independently and in a team
  • Discretion, tact, diplomacy, a pleasant manner, and an ability to positively represent the Faculty at all times
  • Ability to work overtime on some evenings and weekends and to be flexible with hours; and ability to travel to partner law schools
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

This is an on-site position located in Toronto, Ontario.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto’s Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.
