ECE297H1 S - Software Design and Communication - Communication Coordinator

 

Course description: An introduction to engineering design processes, illustrated by the design and implementation of a software system, and to effective oral and written communication in a team context. Principles of software design, project management and teamwork are developed in the lectures and tutorials, and students apply these concepts in the laboratories as they work in a team to design and implement a complex software system. Students learn and practice oral and written communication techniques in lectures and in meetings with their communication instructors and apply these techniques in a variety of documents and presentations, such as short status reports and longer design proposals and design reviews. Students learn software development tools such as version control (git), debuggers, code verifiers and unit test frameworks and gain experience in graphical user interface design and algorithm development.

Class schedule: Students attend two one-hour lectures, one two-hour lab and one 30-minute meeting with a Communication Instructor. 

 

Sessional dates of appointment: October 1, 2025 – April 30, 2026 

 

Hours: 1.5 HCE  

 

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 - $9,820.70; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term - $10,510.04; Sessional Lecturer 2 - $10,510.04; Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term - $10,760.28; Sessional Lecturer 3 - $10,760.28 and Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term - $11,013.89. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.   

 

Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong writing and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching engineering communication, knowledge of engineering design practices, and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. Flexible availability is a requirement for these positions. Experience with large class lecturing (300+), particularly in active learning environments, and experience in teaching computer programming, data science, or software design. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), TESL or CESLA certificate (or equivalent in ESL specialization or development of ESL curricula), familiarity with engineering communication practices and/or experience as an instructor in first year foundation course, eg. Engineering Strategies and Practice or Praxis. Also considered assets are experience in curriculum development, tutoring and/or working with a diverse group of students.  

 

Description of duties:  

  • collaborate with the Course Coordinator on course planning 

  • take a lead role in creating communication assignments 

  • supervise a team of Communication Instructors, overseeing their interaction with students and their assessment of communication assignments    

  • prepare communication lectures 

  • deliver communication lectures 

  • organize and chair weekly one-hour planning meetings with the Communication Instructors  

  • meet weekly with student teams and grade their communication assignments, (maximum of six student teams) 

  • be prepared to deliver the course online if necessary
