Your opportunity:
Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, Operations and Finance, the Financial Administrator is responsible for a variety of finance and accounting assignments within the Department of Management. The incumbent is responsible for general accounting, analysis and financial reporting as well as the administration of research funds and purchasing activities for the Department. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring project and program accounts, reconciling accounts, recording detailed transactions, including payroll, for many accounts, including payroll, identifying and analyzing data discrepancies and taking necessary actions to correct errors, generating standard financial reports, providing advice and data to support the development of business cases and analytics for departmental initiatives, analyzing processes and recommending changes based on understanding of financial priorities, preparing budget variance reports and monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for research agreements.
The incumbent works closely with the Assistant Director and faculty to ensure business transactions are aligned with generally accepted accounting principles, the University’s financial, research and purchasing policies and guidelines. The incumbent brings a strong understanding of financial management, analysis and auditing, and a high degree of professionalism and customer service to facilitate the achievement of departmental goals.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for research and other funding agreements, various business areas, projects and/or programs
- Identifying and analyzing data discrepancies and taking necessary actions to correct errors
- Generating standard financial reports, including preparing budget, forecast and budget variance reports
- Preparing, auditing, and reconciling expense reimbursements and facilitating spending approvals
- Analyzing processes and recommending changes based on understanding of financial priorities
- Liaising with internal and external contacts to facilitate purchasing and/or procurement processes
- Verifying that HRIS transactions are processed according to applicable policies, procedures, collective agreements, and applicable legislated requirements
- Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum three (3) years of related finance administration and accounting experience required.
- Advanced mathematical and Microsoft Excel skills; VLook Up, What-if statements, Pivot table knowledge is required.
- Understanding of budgeting procedures is required.
- Excellent (oral and written) communication skills and interpersonal skills with a strong service orientation.
- Must have effective problem solving ability and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise tact, good judgment, diplomacy and confidentiality in all matters.
- Must be able to stay organized, prioritize and meet deadlines; and exercise accuracy and attention to detail.

Assets (Nonessential):
- Experience working in an academic department in a post-secondary environment is an asset.
- Knowledge of the University’s Guide to Financial Management and Administrative Management System (AMS) are assets.
- Experience with university department budgeting procedures (costing units, general ledgers, etc.) preferred.
