CTLA02H3 Exploring Inter-Cultural Perspectives in Academic Contexts

 

CTLA02H3 is designed for first year, incoming, international students enrolled into UTSC’s Green Path Program. The course has a strong focus on the complex and dynamic relationship between language, culture, and context, and the implications for academic/university engagement. Through a variety of learning opportunities, students share their local knowledge while exploring their own role in contributing to transformative intercultural knowledge(s) by attending both weekly in-person or online, two-hour lectures and a weekly one-hour practicum lead by Ta's/SIA's. 

 

Note in the summer session there is no enrolment limit.

 

Estimated Enrolment: 230

Size of Appointment: up to 75 hours

Salary: $52.26 per hour + vacation pay

 

Appointment Dates: May 1 - August 15, 2025

Sessional Dates: June 12 - August 7, 2025

Minimum Qualifications:

A minimum Master’s degree in a relevant field; a minimum of 3 years of experience teaching English language at the post-secondary level; previous experience teaching CTLA02 in-person and online practicums; demonstrated experience creating pedagogical materials for CTLA02; demonstrated ability to produce quality pedagogical materials and activities that adhere to best practices for anti-racist and decolonizing pedagogies for academic teaching contexts; a demonstrated ability and experience using Canvas (Quercus); demonstrated experience facilitating teaching team meetings.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Relevent experience teaching English for Academic Purposes or teaching in university courses with significant writing instruction component would be an asset. Knowledge and experience using web conferencing tools such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom would be an asset.

 

Relevant Criterion:

Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

 

Description of Duties:

The Head SIA will assist Course Instructor with course administration and TA/SIA management, including preparing practicum materials, co-leading weekly team meetings, facilitating benchmarking, tracking academic integrity, invigilating midterm and final exam; proofreading materials, managing course websites and supporting practicum instructors in-person on Thursdays for the duration of the course. This role supports the course in providing opportunities for students to grow and develop through assignments, activities, readings, quizzes, and journal writing on diverse cultural topics, helping them refine and apply these skills in real-world academic contexts.
