Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Department Manager, the Lead IT Administrator manages the technical and networking infrastructure for departmental teaching, research and administrative activities. The Lead IT Administrator develops, implements and oversees IT systems that are utilized by the department, experimental equipment including, but not limited to, the fMRI facility which is used by the department, the broader University community and the wider university/hospital research community. The Lead IT Administrator identifies the software and hardware priorities and plans for long-term IT needs. This important work also involves developing processes and protocols as well as monitoring the operations security of the department administration, research groups and fMRI facility. The successful candidate will apply their expertise in IT infrastructure and research infrastructure as these intertwined areas are necessary to ensure growth and support of the administrative and research endeavours of the department.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Planning and implementing networks on which the departmental teaching, research, and administrative activities function
  • Analyzing and installing networking equipment
  • Developing and implementing contingency plans for network related software and/or hardware failures
  • Developing network access protocols including firewall protection and wireless connectivity

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years relevant experience administering IT networks, systems, and security within an administrative and research focused environment.
  • Experience installing and maintaining systems running Windows, MacOS, and Linux.
  • Experience with network system administration, e.g., Network Attached Storage (NAS) management server.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise and provide recommendations and guidance on planning, implementing and maintaining both IT and research infrastructure.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to align IT service management initiatives with overall department strategy; strong problem solving and time management skills with the ability to balance competing priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong knowledge of architecture, security, operations, functionality and best practices in systems administration for Windows and Linux client and server technologies.
  • Experience navigating complex technical systems with the ability to develop workaround solutions for technical problems to resolve underlying issues in a timely fashion, and prevent future occurrences using automation; ability to plan and perform implementations with minimal service impacts and to solve complex technical and logistical problems
  • Excellent technical skills with networking to ensure safe and fast migration and back-up of data.
  • Proven ability to elicit cooperation from a diverse range of sources, including staff, faculty, and management at all levels within the faculty, excellent organizational skills for ensuring efficient and effective networking of research and administrative systems
  • Strong oral and writing communication skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts to others with limited technical background.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills to liaise with faculty and staff members to understand the priorities of the department and subsequently develop and implement short- and long-term plans for new or enhanced IT and research infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative manner in a large department as well as within a matrix organization and broader institutional policies and contacts; demonstrated ability to develop IT local practice and polices on cybersecurity and best practices for access and use of IT and research assets.


Assets (Nonessential):

 

  • Experience with Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu.
  • Supervision of staff in an IT environment
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft SharePoint and IT Service Management, e.g. ServiceNow.
  • Experience in development and maintenance of booking systems.
  • Technical knowledge with the operation of highly sophisticated and specialized experimental equipment.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the university environment, governance, and policies.

USW Pay Band 16 -- $99,548 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $127,305. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
