Description:

The International Foundation Program at New College seeks a Lead Sessional Assistant from September 1, 2025 - May 7, 2026 for the following in-person course:

 

IFP100Y1Y – THEMES IN WORLD HISTORY              

Surveys the development of human societies from their origins to the present using examples from across the world.  Topics may include the environment; cultural development and interaction; the creation and nature of belief systems; political, economic and social structures; gender relations; and the relationship between global patterns and local developments. NOTE: the theme in 2025/26 explores how food & commodities impacted world history. Some of the topics explored include: beer, corn, spices, fur, sugar, coffee, tea, cotton, and water.  

 

Enrolment Estimate:  200 students

Class Schedule: 

Lectures: Thursdays 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Tutorials will be held at the following times: Tuesdays 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.; Tuesdays 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.; Wednesdays 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Thursdays 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.; Thursdays 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. [The delivery mode is currently in person].

Hours: 315 hours (leading tutorial of 1 sections of approximately 15 students each + administrative duties related to leading a team of 5-7 TAs)

Salary:  $54.27/hour + 4% vacation pay

 

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

              

Minimum Qualifications

• Due to the conditional enrolment nature of the International Foundation program, previous experience as a Teaching Assistant for IFP100Y or for a similar program for international students is required

• Strong organizational skills, including the ability to lead small teams, schedule meetings, communicate effectively, plan and document work

• Demonstrated background in a historical discipline as it relates to the content of the course

• Teaching experience facilitating small groups

• Experience supervising teaching assistants at the University of Toronto

• Experience as a course instructor

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated understanding of the learning needs of international students who speak English as a second language

• Experience teaching English as a Second Language

• Experience with online instruction

•Experience in working in a highly collaborative environment

• Experience as a Lead Writing TA for the WIT program (Writing Integrated Teaching)

Responsibilities

• Working with Course Instructor to mentor the course’s TAs as they implement each week’s activities as outlined by the Course Instructor

• Meeting weekly with the Course Instructor, helping identify and address any problems that arise

• Supporting a team of 5-7 TAs who would all lead tutorials weekly

• Collaborating with the Course Instructor on developing assignment rubrics and working with the course TAs to implement such rubrics

• Co-leading grading meetings  with the Course Instructor for each assignment to ensure grading is done consistently and fairly across sections of the course

• Preparing and conducting one 1.5 hour tutorial each week

• Holding office hours

• Attending lectures and consulting with the Instructor

• Advising students about and marking course assignments.
