The Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and the Division of Palliative Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine and Department of Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are inviting applications for the positions of Academic Palliative Medicine Specialist. There are three full-time positions available, one in each of the Palliative Care Unit, Outpatient Clinics, and on the Inpatient Consult Service. The expected start date for each position is July 1, 2025, or another mutually agreeable date.
The successful candidate for the full-time position in the Palliative Care Unit will be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto with a position description as a Clinician Teacher, Clinician Educator, or Clinician in Quality Improvement at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The successful candidate should have leadership experience and interest in taking on the role of Medical Lead in the Palliative Care Unit after a period of approximately one year.
The successful candidate for the full-time position in the Outpatient Clinics will be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto with a position description as a Clinician Teacher, Clinician Educator, or Clinician in Quality Improvement at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant, or Associate Professor.
The successful candidate for the full-time position on the Inpatient Consult Service will be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto with a position description as a Clinician in Quality Improvement, although consideration may be given for Clinician Teacher or Clinician Educator at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant, or Associate Professor.
We are looking for a collegial candidate committed to collaborating with this high performing team, and aspiring to advance activities to even greater levels. Responsibilities will include excellence in clinical care, superb collaboration and communication with interprofessional team members, supervision of trainees in clinical care setting, formal teaching and scholarly achievements. The successful candidate will have expertise in complex symptom management and goals of care. Clinical teaching will be at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Teaching experience will be measured by the presence of a strong track record of interests and excellence in medical student and resident education, formal training in teaching methodology, awards, leadership as a clinical educator and other relevant experience. The individual must be a strong team player and have demonstrated a commitment to academic scholarship. Quality Improvement and research excellence will be assessed by the presence of research grants, publications, invited presentations, awards, accolades and other related accomplishments. It is expected that the positions will be 80% clinical and 20% related to teaching, quality improvement, research, and/or administrative duties. The successful candidate will join one of our on-call pools, covering either the consult and clinic services, or the palliative care unit as decided in discussion with the Head of the Division.
The successful applicant will join the Division of Palliative Medicine, an Interdepartmental Division at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center with 12 full-time faculty. As a major provider of tertiary and quaternary services, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center is home to the Odette Cancer Center, one of the largest cancer centers in the country, one of the largest ALS clinics in the country, and the largest stroke and trauma centre in Ontario. The Division of Palliative Medicine serves patients with a wide range of serious illnesses including both malignant and non-malignant, including those with a high degree of complexity. The Division of Palliative Medicine supports a 56 bed palliative care unit, a robust inpatient consult service, and ambulatory care clinics in cancer, heart failure, ALS, and renal failure, with plans to expand further.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree or equivalent; have or be eligible for the Certificate of Added Competency (CAC) in Palliative Care with the College of Family Physicians of Canada, or certification in Palliative Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The successful candidate must have or be eligible for licensure to practice from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and hold active CMPA membership.
Estimated remuneration will be in the range of $232,000-$300,000 (fee-for-service estimate). The successful candidate will also be eligible for academic support through the Hospital’s Alternate Funding Plan commensurate with academic productivity and aligned with the appropriate Department.
