Description:

NOTE: THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL NOVEMBER 30, 2023

The Department of Medical Imaging at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) in Toronto is currently recruiting a full-time, fellowship-trained, academic Emergency, Trauma & Critical Care (ETAC) Radiologist to join our growing ETAC Radiology Division. We are a collegial group that seeks clinically excellent radiologists to support our mission of excellent patient care delivered in a positive and constructive work environment. We offer excellent compensation and opportunities for professional and career growth. Academic rank at the University of Toronto will be commensurate with applicant experience. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2024.

St. Michael’s Hospital is a member of the Unity Health Toronto network and is a busy, 600-bed tertiary care and Trauma Centre and one of four principal teaching hospitals of the University of Toronto. Clinical instruction of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate Medical Imaging trainees occurs on a daily basis, including within our emergency radiology fellowship program. We have a strong culture and history of close collaborative working and teaching relationships with the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Critical Care and Trauma Surgery.

The SMH Emergency Department (ED) is one of the largest academic EDs in Canada. The ED supports a number of key regional programs including code stroke, code STEMI, mobile crisis intervention, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, and advanced tertiary and quaternary critical care. SMH is one of only two level 1 trauma centres in the Greater Toronto Area serving over 6 million people. Staffed exclusively by specialty trained Emergency physicians, the current ED sees over 75000 patients per year. We are currently in the process of phased transitioning to a new state-of-the-art, purpose-built ED with a centralized comprehensive medical imaging hub including reporting facilities, CT, full-service ultrasound and x-ray.

Our department currently has 9 ultrasound units, 3 multi-detector CT scanners (1 dual-energy volume CT scanner), and 4 MRI scanners (two 1.5T and two 3.0 T). The recent addition of a portable ultra-low field (0.064mT) head MRI scanner is allowing us to evaluate, innovate and define the early clinical implementation of this technology in Canada. A new PET-CT is currently being installed and is anticipated to be operational in the department in 2024.

In addition to our dedicated MRI Research Centre, significant new resources have been added in support of the Department’s internationally-recognized research work in Medical Imaging artificial intelligence through a Research Chair in Medical Imaging Artificial Intelligence. The hospital houses the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute and the Keenan Research Centre which provide world-class research support and opportunities for radiologists to engage in collaborative translational research.

The successful applicant will provide diagnostic interpretations of plain-film, ultrasound, CT, and MR imaging examinations in support of Emergency, Trauma and Inpatient Services. Interested and qualified candidates will also have the opportunity to participate in subspecialty division (Neuro, Women’s, Body, Cardiothoracic) schedules. The successful candidate will hold certification in Diagnostic Radiology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or international equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed fellowship training in Emergency/Trauma Radiology and candidates who have completed postgraduate fellowship training in both Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Body Imaging or have significant experience in all imaging modalities within the scope of acute care radiology. The successful candidates will be self-starters, team players and will have a strong commitment to patient care and continuous quality improvement.

Review of applications will begin immediately. The position will remain open until filled or recruitment is closed.
