Description:

The Department of Medical Imaging at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) and the University of Toronto are currently recruiting a full-time, fellowship-trained, academic abdominal radiologist to join our Abdominal Imaging Division. The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is November 1, 2024.


The incumbent in this position will rotate through all of areas of abdominal & pelvic imaging independently, encompassing US, CT, MRI, X-ray and image-guided procedures, and will perform routine fluoroscopic GI/GU procedures. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. The incumbent will be a self-starter and team player, and must have a strong commitment to excellent patient care, continuous quality improvement, research and teaching.


The successful candidate must hold an MD degree or equivalent, must be board certified or board eligible in diagnostic radiology, and must be eligible for medical licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. They must hold fellowship training in Abdominal/Body imaging, and must be trained in abdominal and pelvic imaging. Experience reporting PET/CT studies will be a significant asset. Additional cardiothoracic imaging fellowship training encompassing chest CT and cardiac MRI & CT, may be considered extra assets to provide interdivisional cross-coverage. The successful candidate will have a strong record of academic achievement, and will be committed to outstanding quality in clinical operations.


The estimated salary will be in the range of $300,000 – 500,000 per annum, commensurate with academic rank, qualifications, and experience. Applications will be accepted until August 31, 2024, or until the position is filled.

St. Michael’s Hospital is a member of the Unity Health Toronto network and is a busy, 600-bed tertiary care and Trauma Centre and one of four principal teaching hospitals of the University of Toronto. Within the University of Toronto, our department has distinguished itself with a long history of recognized excellence in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate teaching. We have a strong culture and history of close collaborative clinical and teaching relationships with Gastroenterology, Urology, Nephrology, Colorectal Surgery, Medical Oncology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, and the Trauma program. St. Michael’s Hospital is a busy kidney transplant centre, an American College of Surgeons-accredited Level I trauma centre, and has busy cancer services throughout the Unity Health Network especially in rectal, gastric, prostate, HPB, thoracic and breast cancer.


The Abdominal Imaging Division encompasses busy abdominal and pelvic CT, MRI, ultrasound, x-ray and procedural services supporting these important clinical programs. Each year, there are 4 Abdominal Imaging fellows, as well as up to 3 Women’s Imaging clinical fellows at St. Michael’s who rotate through the various Abdominal Imaging rotations. There are more than 10 radiology residents from the Department of Medical Imaging, University of Toronto per year who also rotate through the division. There are 9 ultrasound units, 3 CT scanners, and 4 MRI scanners (two are 3.0 T). The Department is extending its footprint into the 3rd floor of the new Peter Gilgan Tower of the hospital, where a 5th new MRI scanner (3.0T) and a new PET-CT scanner are both currently being installed and anticipated to be operational in the department by end of 2024. Net new additional CT and MRI scanners are also being planned.


The Department houses an MRI Research Centre with significant Abdominal Imaging activity, and also houses a Professorship in Medical Imaging Artificial Intelligence with ancillary funding for projects in support of the Department’s internationally recognized research work in the development and utilization of radiology artificial intelligence. The hospital houses the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, the Keenan Research Centre, and the Data Science & Advanced Analytics program that all provide world-class research and academic opportunities for radiologists to engage in collaborative translational research in Medical Imaging.
