MIE429H1 F - Machine Intelligence Capstone Design
Course description: A half-year capstone design course in which students work in small teams to apply the engineering design, technical, and communication skills learned previously, while refining their skills in teamwork and project management. The course will take a “systems approach” to machine intelligence design, where students will identify, frame and design solutions to real-world problems in the field. Students will engage with industry partners, and work through a process that results in a functional prototype. The resulting designs are assessed on their engineering quality and design credibility. In addition, each student engages in individual critical reflection on their course activities, team performance, and on their growth as an engineering designer across their undergraduate program. Students are supported by a teaching team comprising both design and domain experts.

Hours: Up to 40 hours
Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates are: Writing Instructor 1 - $55.46/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 1 Long Term - $59.62/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 - $59.62/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 Long Term - $61.05/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 (priority) - $61.38/hr plus 6% vacation pay and Writing Instructor 2 (priority) Long Term- $62.82/hr plus 6% vacation pay. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies), with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), familiarity with engineering communication practices and/or experience as an instructor in first year foundation course, Praxis I or II. Also considered assets are experience in tutoring and/or working with a diverse group of students.
Description of duties:

Meeting with the course instructor to gain an understanding of the course

Meeting with teams on draft proposals to recommend further development, clarification, and improved communication

Providing support and critique for students presenting draft final presentations

Must be available for two 2-hour classes (one in September and one in November)
