Your opportunity:

The BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab is a high-tech facility that enables students, faculty and staff to interact with the global financial community and its resources in a real-time setting. This state-of-the-art multi-function laboratory creates new opportunities for training, teaching, research, product and curriculum development. The FRT-Lab provides a focal point for research and training in a range of financial disciplines including: investment strategy and portfolio management; financial engineering and risk management; trading; and, analysis of the microstructure of markets.

 

The Manager of Operations is a hands-on leadership role responsible for the seamless functioning of all aspects of the lab’s infrastructure and daily operations. This includes managing and maintaining the physical lab environment (IT, AV, networking equipment, and space), ensuring software and data tools are accessible and functional, and supporting the execution of lab activities, including Rotman programs and events.

 

The Manager plays a key role in coordinating with internal stakeholders (such as Rotman/Central IT, Building Operations, and academic staff) and external vendors to ensure uninterrupted lab operations and 100% uptime. They also provide operational support for academic initiatives, working closely with the Educational Developer, Lab Assistants, and Academic Director to facilitate the smooth delivery of educational content and programming.

 

In addition to technical and operational responsibilities, the Manager oversees a small team, including staff-appointed unionized staff and a group of casual lab assistants, ensuring effective team performance and alignment with lab goals.

 

The Manager is also expected to possess strong knowledge of business and finance education, enabling them to support the development and delivery of innovative, experiential learning initiatives. A solid understanding of financial concepts and educational best practices will help ensure that lab programming and resources align with the learning objectives of undergraduate, graduate, and executive education programs at Rotman.

 

Essential Qualifications:

I. EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related discipline; a graduate degree in a similar field is preferred.  Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

II. EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of five (5) years of related management experience, preferably in a university environment.  Demonstrated experience in managing and leading staff and teams. Experience soliciting and interpreting requirements from end users (faculty, staff, etc.) for the development or enhancement of custom products and services.  Demonstrated experience in project management and event coordination.

 

III. SKILLS:

Strong technical skill in network administration, management of IT functions, software management, and cyber security. Coding skills are an asset. Strong planning and organizational skills, project and event management, and budget management.  Proven ability to manage, develop, mentor and support staff.  Self-motivated, flexible, adaptable, and responsive to feedback.  Demonstrate sound judgment in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  Creative problem-solving skills, independent judgment, critical thinking.  Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure with good decision-making skills.  Entrepreneurial leadership abilities, able to identify and develop new business opportunities.  Proven networking and relationship development and management capabilities.  Maturity and professionalism to deal with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders is essential.  Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively with highly diverse and demanding communities of stakeholders. Must have political acumen, negotiation and persuasion skills, be diplomatic and be able to engage effectively with multiple stakeholders including faculty, corporate clients, university administrators, staff, alumni, students, and business partners. Tact, cultural sensitivity, discretion, sensitivity to confidential matters are important.  Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

 

IV. OTHER:

Knowledge sufficient to supervise IT and AV support and other technologies. Familiarity with business and finance pedagogy is strongly preferred. The successful candidate should demonstrate an understanding of key concepts in finance and financial education, including areas such as financial markets, investments, trading, risk management, and data analytics. Experience supporting or delivering education in these areas – particularly in experiential or technology-enabled formats – is also a strong asset.
