The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked among the top-10 research libraries in North America. Your opportunity:

Scholars Portal, a department of the University of Toronto Library, is the digital service arm of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), managing infrastructure and services that support Ontario’s 21 university libraries. The Scholars Portal team of librarians, developers, and systems staff support services in four broad areas: research and member services; data and geospatial services; digital collections; and digital preservation services.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Systems and Technical Operations, the Senior Systems Administrator will support the growing suite of software and hardware infrastructure for the Scholarsportal Community. The incumbent will be involved in operational support and system-level administration of Scholars Portal’s private and public cloud infrastructure. The incumbent will work closely with other technical staff for server provisioning, application deployment and monitoring, configuration, patching, package administration, backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning. The incumbent will be a member of a dynamic team applying advanced software concepts, techniques, and objectives to plan, create, maintain, enhance, and operate robust, high-availability services responsive to evolving needs.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Designing and implementing new operating systems and subsystems server software
  • Planning and implementing expansion and enhancement of IT networks independently
  • Analyzing, troubleshooting and testing highly complex systems
  • Developing and updating architectural framework for highly complex and confidential university-wide IT systems


Essential Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree (Computer Science) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years related work experience.
  • Experience with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design
  • Experience deploying and maintaining highly available and resilient systems
  • Designing and maintaining distributed systems
  • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration (e.g., filesystems, inodes, system calls) and networking (e.g., TCP/IP, routing, network topologies)
  • Experience with Configuration Management (Puppet/Chef/Ansible)
  • Experience managing Apache, HAProxy
  • Experience in database management with mySQL, SQLServer and Oracle as well as writing SQL scripts
  • Demonstrated experience with some of the following:o OpenStacko ElasticSearch, Mysql, Mongo, Rabbitmq, Rediso Kubernetes, bosh, dockero Python, Go, Perl C, C++, Java or Rubyo Amazon Web Services or other cloud service providers
  • Experience working with technologies for XML-based applications including XML databases, web service technologies such as Apache Axis
  • Experience working with federated identity management frameworks such as Shibboleth

USW Pay Band 16 -- $90,424 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $115,638. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
