Description:

 

The Cinema Studies Institute in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream senior position in the area of Film and Media Theory and History of the Global South. The appointment will be at the rank of Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

 

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Cinema Studies, or a closely related area, with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record in research and teaching, as well as a clear commitment to ongoing development in both domains. The successful applicant will be an internationally established scholar specializing in the theory and history of moving image media and culture in a Global South context. Expertise in theories of cinematic archives, time and temporality, and media industries are required. Methodologies informed by post-colonial, critical race, Indigenous, feminist, and/or queer thought are particularly welcome. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen the existing profile of the Cinema Studies Institute. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

 

Candidates must provide strong evidence of excellence in research which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals and presses, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline—such as a position on the editorial board of a leading journal or significant editing experience—as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing and international eminence.

 

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs at the Cinema Studies Institute, in both required core courses and more specialized electives; to supervise and mentor students and faculty; and to participate in affairs at the Institute.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
