The Public History Lab (PHL), Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a one-year appointment. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.
PHL is seeking a Research Associate with experience and expertise in the field of twentieth-century Central and Eastern European History and of public history. The incumbent will play a leading role in the PHL and its research projects on Ukraine, Eastern Europe, national identity and memory. They will be expected to conduct historical research, as directed by the lab’s Principal Investigator, including archival research in several European languages, secondary and literature reviews, analysis, writing up their findings, editing their own work and that of the Principal Investigator and of the project’s collaborators. The Research Associate will be responsible for helping to oversee a large, international research collaboration, which will include meeting with collaborators and discussing their contributions, editing contributions, organizing meetings and conferences at which the project’s progress and findings are discussed. This will also include day-to-day operational management of the projects led by the Principal Investigator; coordinating events, workshops, and research projects; budgeting; and coordinating recruitment and outreach for students, partners across sectors, visiting researchers and professionals, and colleagues. Other responsibilities will include: coordinating project activities; liaising with an advisory committee and other community partners in pursuing goals and priorities; and creating and editing project documents. They will be intrinsically involved in research projects where they contribute, by way of their expertise and experience, to the projects directed by the principal investigator, and must have the capacity to independently carry out research projects as needed. Occasional travel is required to attend relevant meetings and workshops.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education - PhD in History, preference for a Central or Eastern European expertise
Experience – Minimum four years of experience conducting research on issues relating to Ukrainian history and experience with research project management.
Skills – Historical analysis and writing, project management, experience with report writing, data management, budgeting and large research grants. Ability to provide operational and administrative support to a busy research lab as well as exercise good judgement, tact and decision-making skills is required.
Additional skills required include leadership and strong interpersonal skills to assist in the guidance and implementation of the research project that is comprised of a multi-disciplinary and international team of scholars.
Ukrainian language skills essential. Other languages, particular Polish, Russian and Czech an asset.
