Your Opportunity: 
Prof. Daniel M Roy, in the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Toronto Scarborough, invites applicants for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to conduct collaborative research in mathematical statistics outlined in an awarded NFRFE-2018 New Frontier in Research proposal, titled “Rebuilding the Foundations of Bayesian Statistics on Nonstandard Analysis”.

 

The proposed research in mathematical statistics aims to characterize the set-theoretic relationships between Bayesian and frequentist notions of optimality in statistical decision theory. The approach is to use nonstandard analysis to replace countably additive (prior) probability measures with hypercountably additive probability measures. The project will also look at the connection between frequentist admissibility in location models and recurrence of Markov chains; the role of hyperfinite sets in establishing the existence of so-called “matching priors” to connect confidence intervals and credible regions; and the relationship with approaches based on charges.

 

This opportunity of a Research Associate (Limited Term) is a 6-months term appointment and the anticipated start date is September 1, 2022.


Job Duties:
The candidate will be responsible for the conceptualization, execution, communication, and dissemination of mathematical research in service of the proposal described above and as directed by Prof. Daniel M. Roy. Beyond these responsibilities, the successful candidate may be expected to participate in the preparation of research presentations; grant applications; research supervisions of two or more students and other trainees; and the organization of workshop/conferences. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of Roy’s group.

 
Qualifications: 
(Minimum Qualifications)
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics and at least three (3) years of postdoctoral experience, with demonstrated academic and research excellence in at least two of the following academic areas: mathematical statistics or measure theory; mathematical logic; and descriptive set theory. Excellence is to be demonstrated through publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals in statistics, mathematics, and/or related fields. It is also essential that the candidate highlight their ability to work independently, e.g., by single-author publications; experience presenting research, as evidence through invited seminars; past experience organizing scientific/mathematical workshop/conferences/etc.; past experience supervising students in research.

 

Travel: Limited. The Research Associate will be expected to present research at academic conferences. 
 
Notes:

This is a 6-months term appointment, with the possibility of extension, depending on approval of supervisor based on performance and funding.
