OVERVIEW:

“The Laboratory for RNA-Based Lifeforms” (https://RNAlab.ca) at the University of Toronto is an interdisciplinary research colelctive led by Dr. Artem Babaian. The lab focuses on understanding the structure and function of genes through the prism of RNA and computational biology.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Genomics or similar field, or a an equivalent record of research and education experience in a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in the field of computational virology
  • A demonstrated capacity to write scientific papers, generate figures, and strategically plan and execute research experiments
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required and a proven ability to work in a collaborative laboratory environment is an asset.
  • Experience in preparing grant applications and/or the communication of scientific results at international conferences
  • Publications in the topic of research interest relevant to these qualifications

 

KEY DUTIES 

  • Strategic design, planning and execution of a research program focused on novel bitud discovery.
  • Establish reproducible bioinformatic screening protocols to identify novel viruses from public sequencing datasets and analyze their phylogenetic, and ecological relationships.
  • Systematically review published literature associated with sequencing datasets for the clinical, and molecular interpretation of virus-host, and plant-animal interactions.
  • Liaise with collaborators and aggregate desperate data-sources for systematic reporting and analysis of plant viruses and/or other viruses.
  • Preparing the materials for manuscripts, grants and scientific presentation. Writing a scientific paper for publication and peer-review.

 
The Candidate is expected to be an active research participant of the Babaian laboratories, and provide technical and scientific support for research trainees. At all times, the individual will be expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the lab.
