Overview:

 

The Department of Biochemistry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate to perform biophysical and biochemical characterization of proteins in the Moraes Lab.

 

Qualifications:

 

Candidates require a Ph.D. with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the fields Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering, or a related field. Prior research experience must also include obtaining monoclonal antibodies through expression from hybridomas or transfections and purification of both mAb and Fab entities. Candidates require hands-on experience biophysical methods and equipment including biomolecular interaction tools (SPR, BLI, MST, CD, and NanoDSF) and also experience with structure determination using Cryo-EM and sample preparation workflows. Candidates will be expected to have experience with outer membrane Gram-negative bacteria protein purification and microbiology experience working with gram negative pathogens.


Candidates must also have a strong and long-standing track record of experience in designing, planning, and executing experiments, as well as data analysis, interpretation, quantification, and figure preparation for grants and manuscripts. 

Candidates will also be involved in mentoring and assisting in training students and postdoctoral fellows use biophysical equipment in the Moraes lab and Biomolecular interaction suite and support grant application preparation and presenting findings at meetings and conferences. Excellent organizational and communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment, supporting various user groups.

 

Key Duties:


•    Designing, planning and executing research aimed at understanding the interactions of Outer membrane proteins and protein binding partners
•    Characterize the structural binding determinants of how monoclonal antibodies bind to Neisseria outer membrane proteins
•    Provide support for biophysical methods and equipment including biomolecular interaction tools (SPR, BLI, MST, CD, NanoDSF …)
•    Support the training of undergrad and graduate student working on related biochemical projects
•    Assisting with research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies and progress reporting related to the development of translational tools to prevent Gram-negative bacterlai pathogenesis.
•    Contributing to research as a member of a dynamic and productive team with diverse expertise.
•    Contributing to team efforts with other internal and external collaborators to explore research questions and test novel methodologies.
•    Liaising with collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program.
•    Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals.
•    Presenting findings at local, national and international conferences.
•    Training other members in the lab.


Beyond these responsibilities, the individual may be expected to participate in research supervision of two or more students or other trainees. At all times, the individual will be expected to support the overall research of the Moraes lab.
