The Department of Pharmacology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) within the Andreazza Lab, focusing on translational and experimental work in mitochondrial diagnostics, mitochondrial transplantation, and therapeutics. The position will support the lab’s efforts in precision medicine and cellular modeling of mitochondrial dysfunction, contributing to the development of tools and treatments with real-world clinical impact. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with all members of the lab and in partnership with the Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative (www.mito2i.ca).
Qualifications:
Qualifications include a PhD in a relevant field of biomedical or life sciences with a minimum of 1-year postdoctoral experience in mitochondrial research and medicine. Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in mitochondrial functional assays including, but not limited to, ATP production, Seahorse XF analysis, metabolomics, and mitochondrial imaging. Proficiency in generating iPSC lines from white blood cells and differentiating these into organoids is also required. Experience in mitochondrial genetics is considered an asset.
Candidates must also show evidence of their ability to develop an independent research program and to independently direct projects. Previous supervisory experience is essential in order for the successful candidate to contribute to the guidance of technicians and trainees. Experience preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-review publications/journals, contributing to the development of research proposals to granting agencies, and presenting findings at local, national, or international conferences is also required.
Responsibilities:
- Participate on weekly in-person lab meetings
- Work collaboratively with all members in the lab/ stakeholders, including with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams
- Design, plan, and execute research projects
- Conduct independent and collaborative research on mitochondrial function and disease modeling
- Oversee the design, optimization, and data interpretation of mitochondrial assays
- Generate and maintain iPSC lines from WBCs, and derive various organoid models
- Analyze and interpret experimental data and contribute to publications
- Assist in grant writing and preparation of research manuscripts
- Present findings at internal and external conferences
- Contribute to the mentorship and training of students and junior researchers
- Ensuring project goals are met within the context of the larger Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative
- Liaising with collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program
Beyond these responsibilities, the individual is expected to support the overall mission of the Andreazza lab and Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative. The incumbent will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence and will design, direct, execute, analyze and present, in written and oral forms, novel investigative studies that build on and/or take advantage of the resources and expertise within the lab as well as incumbent’s academic expertise.
