Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Department Manager and working as part of the finance team in the Department, the Senior Financial Officer administers financial activities for the Department’s operating budgets budget, active research awards and subgrants.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Monitoring, reconciling and reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts while ensuring that research sponsor financial terms have been applied correctly
  • Interpreting policies and procedures for administering departmental research accounts, working with internal University and external contacts to resolve restricted fund administration and reporting issues
  • Serving as a resource on financial administration to other financial junior staff in the department, implementing process improvements for financial administration activities including preparing SOPs
  • Processing and overseeing administration of staff appointed HRIS records and payroll, processing stipend and honoraria
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements and verifying that provisions of applicable collective agreements and/or policies are applied appropriately
  • Forecasting, planning and monitoring departmental operating budgets, processing accounts payable and accounts receivable according to the University Guide to Financial Management
  • Producing complex financial reports, identifying and analyzing data discrepancies and taking necessary actions to correct errors
  • Liaising with internal and external contacts to facilitate purchasing and/or procurement processes

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in in commerce, accounting and/or finance or acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Experience monitoring and reconciling budgets to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations.
  • Experience overseeing, monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts.
  • Experience with overseeing, verifying and processing accounts payable and receivable activities.
  • Experience with overseeing payroll processes, including processing payroll and troubleshooting and resolving payroll discrepancies.
  • Experience with analyzing complex statistical reports and/ or financial information for financial planning and funding terms compliance.
  • Experience with forecasting and planning financial activities incorporating budgets with multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries.
  • Experience interpreting and adhering to granting agencies’ funding guidelines and policies.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability working with University’s Administrative Management System (FIS, DIS, RIS and HRIS) or other similar systems.
  • Demonstrated ability with compiling, investigating, and analyzing financial information and making recommendations based on the outcome of analyses.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to also work independently.
  • Highly proficient in using MS Office with advanced MS Excel skills.
  • Detail oriented and demonstrated accuracy in performing work.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines and with overlapping priorities and various tasks.
  • Ability to handle information of confidential nature.

USW Pay Band 13 -- $83,150 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $106,336. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
