Your opportunity:
Under the direction of the Manager, Lab Planning, the Senior Lab Planner is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of capital project planning required to support Divisional research, teaching and administrative space infrastructure meets the requirements of the academic mission of the Faculty of Arts and Science. Infrastructure includes all space and facilities within the Division. The incumbent takes the lead in planning, organizing and overseeing projects that are identified as Divisional priorities and is expected to plan and implement capital/renovation projects which run from design of interior layouts to building systems.
The Senior Lab Planner is a senior member of the Office of Infrastructure Planning team and in conjunction with the Manager, Lab Planning will participate in setting the annual priorities for space planning to support the Division. As a senior team member, the Senior Lab Planner will participate in team problem-solving, communicating information related to best practices, seeking out advice from other team members, conveying relevant information to the team, and participating in team discussions. They will be responsible for large and complex projects, including the development of planning reports, resource management and the overall schedule.
Research and teaching laboratories at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts and Science cover a wide range of disciplines; lab types include laser, biological, chemical and computational. Laboratories are dynamic environments equipped to accommodate innovative research and hands-on teaching for researchers and students. The Senior Lab Planner will play a crucial role in collaborating with university departments to assess specialized needs and oversee the planning and renovation of new and existing lab spaces with a comprehensive approach to ensure space optimization, sustainability, compliance and safety.
We are recruiting for 3 Senior Lab Planners.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Consulting with clients regarding the development of project scope and resources
- Developing project planning reports, scope, resources and schedule for project(s)
- Overseeing project design progress and ensuring appropriate parties review and approve
- Creating detailed space utilization analysis and assessments for use in client proposals
- Ensuring compliance with building codes and various standards & regulations that would affect the certification or status of the University or a facility
- Planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects
- Assessing cost overruns, including cost implications of design errors and omissions; user requests; UofT requirements/ guidelines etc. and recommending how to address concerns
Essential Qualifications:
- Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in Architecture or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education. A bachelor's degree in Architecture strongly preferred.
- A minimum eight (8) years of recent and relevant experience leading renovation/construction projects, with a minimum 6 years of recent and relevant experience taking the lead in designing, and managing lab renovation and construction projects with a focus on Lab design projects, budget management, timeline forecasts and programming, as well as hands-on experience in preparing CAD drawings and specifications.
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating and resolving infrastructure requirements for a range of complex lab types, including complex wet labs
- Must have experience coordinating and liaising with outside consultants.
- Experience planning interior layouts including specialized equipment, AV and furniture for capital projects
- Experience with lab furniture and lab equipment orders, costs, tenders and contract management.
- Experience with acting as a resource to a team and clients on design and technical issues.
- Knowledge of the delivery of complex services in an academic environment such as Faculty of Arts and Science, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse community
- Advanced AutoCAD skills for space planning and construction documents.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
- Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, leadership and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage conflicting priorities, multi-task, and have excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Demonstrated strong client service orientation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Assets (Nonessential):
- Experience with laboratory technical requirements such as Canadian Biosafety Standards, CCAC, decommissioning, containment standards etc.

USW Pay Band 15 -- $95,627. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $122,290. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
