The Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI) provides leadership in teaching and learning at the University of Toronto and provides support for pedagogy and pedagogy-driven instructional technology for all teaching staff and teaching assistants (primarily through the Teaching Assistant’s Training Program) across the university’s campuses and divisions.  As a hub for the network of teaching centres across the institution, CTSI plays a vital role in supporting collaboration between the centres and with the divisions, supporting institutional teaching and learning priorities and teaching excellence across the university. CTSI builds capacity among all our teachers, both faculty and graduate students.

The Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI) provides leadership in teaching and learning at the University of Toronto and provides support for pedagogy and pedagogy-driven instructional technology for all teaching staff and graduate teaching assistants across all the University’s campuses and divisions.

 

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI), CTSI’s Senior Manager, Educational Development is responsible for managing a team of educational developers within CTSI that provide ongoing support for innovative and scholarly teaching across all divisions and all three campuses. This support includes providing pedagogical guidance and faculty development around the effective use of teaching data and scholarly research to enhance teaching. This position also oversees job training and professional development opportunities for the University’s graduate student Course Instructors and Teaching Assistants, as offered through the Teaching Assistants’ Training Program (TATP).

 

In consultation with the Executive Director, key duties include setting standards and procedures for the Educational Development (ED) team, effective and efficient delivery of services, the allocation and prioritization of human resources, working collaboratively with staff within the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation, the Division of the Vice-President & Provost, the other campus teaching centres at UTM and UTSC , and members of the broader University of Toronto community. This extends to providing leadership, support to, and collaboration with the community of educational development professionals working in academic divisions across the institution.

 

Along with the Executive Director and the other Senior Managers within CTSI, the Senior Manager, Educational Development helps lead the overall CTSI office. The Senior Manager, Educational Development contributes their specific subject matter and organizational expertise to the team but does so with a global sense of ownership and pride for the entire teaching support ecosystem and experience at the University of Toronto, as well as the teaching and learning priorities of CTSI, and an understanding that their actions have an effect far beyond the specifics of any one project or initiative.

 


Essential Qualifications:


EDUCATION:

 

Master’s degree or acceptable combination of education and experience. PhD strongly preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

Eight (8) years of relevant experience in supporting educational/faculty development in a higher education setting. Minimum of six (6) years related administrative experience at a senior level in a University setting. Knowledge of the structure of the University, its policies and procedures. Demonstrated success with the implementation of new initiatives and processes. Requires a sophisticated understanding of the post-secondary environment, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), instructional design and the provision of support for pedagogy and pedagogy-driven instructional technology. Experience managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment. Experience with program development, professional learning, service delivery and evaluation of those activities in a higher education context. Proven effective leadership and participation in committee work. Post-secondary teaching experience and/or experience delivering training in an academic setting required.

 

SKILLS:

 

Knowledge of pedagogical theories and approaches relevant for a complex post-secondary context. Knowledge of academic and collaborative technologies principles, operations, and industry best practices. Superior ability to manage a complex set of competing priorities. Superior ability to acquire and distill complex technical information quickly and effectively. Superior ability to work under pressure and handle stressful situations. Excellent oral and written communication, research, presentation and interpersonal skills. Ability to successfully manage relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, clients and vendors. Ability to exercise judgment, tact, discretion, initiative and determination. Independent decision-making capability and pro-active problem-solving skills. Superior organizational skills in planning and project management.

 

OTHER:

 

Superior ability to foster a collaborative environment within CTSI as well as within the broader community. Superior ability to work with senior administrative and academic administrators in a manner that facilitates cooperation. Ability to prioritize and demonstrated excellent time management. Superior attention to detail. Ability to work with competing demands and strict deadlines. Ability to adapt to changing needs.
