About us:
The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering is home to about 60 professors leading research on a very broad range of topics. On the Industrial Engineering side, research areas include Operations Research, Information Engineering, Human Factors, and Applied Machine Learning, all of which seek to improve the systems we as humans rely on to navigate our world. On the Mechanical Engineering side, research areas include Robotics, Mechanics & Design, Materials, and Thermofluids, topics that are applied to applications including manufacturing, energy production, and bioengineering.
We are also home to about 2,000 very talented students: about 1,300 undergraduates are enrolled in the Industrial Engineering and in the Mechanical Engineering BASc programs. We have about 350 Master of Engineering (MEng) students, a professional program for students taking courses with us for a year or two. And we have about 350 MASc and PhD students, who work individually on research projects with a particular professor.

Your opportunity:
The Sinton Group within the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto is a leader in CO2 capture, CO2 conversion and thermal fluids. The successful candidate will support the advancement of scientific knowledge within an inclusive team and environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details.
- Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility.
- Liaising with service providers to coordinate the resolution of technical/administrative issues; providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on experiment set ups and lab techniques.
- Analyzing and recommending suitable materials and methods of approaching fabrication and/or lab work; modifying experimental processes and implementing more efficient ways to conduct experiments.
- Creating and reviewing CAM programs and tool paths for manufacturing.
- Creating CAD drawings based on existing paper drawings and on-site measurements.
- Designing, modifying and fabricating custom lab apparatus, tools and jigs.
- Modifying and testing experiments to determine practicality.
Essential Qualifications:
- Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in Chemical Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering Technology, Chemical Laboratory Technology or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum four (4) years of recent and relevant experience setting up, performing and supporting chemical experiments with experience fabricating parts for the experiments.
- Minimum two (2) years experience creating complex CAD drawings and creating and reviewing CAM programs to manufacture parts.
- Experience using CAM programs.
- Experience preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of a facility.
- Experience constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process.
- Minimum two (2) years experience liaising with stakeholders to ensure budget, deadlines, standards, and scope were met, and to complete specifications for new projects.
- Proven ability to read and comprehend work instructions, engineering drawings, schematics and diagrams.
- High level of proficiency with personal computers and appropriate software packages including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the proven ability to explain technical terminology/processes to a wide range of audience.
- Proven ability to organize, prioritize, manage and meet multiple competing deadlines with high flexibility, accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills with the demonstrated capability to effectively work independently, within a team, and under direction.
- Proven ability to practice strong professionalism, tact, discretion, initiative, confidentiality, and sound judgment.

Assets (Nonessential):
- Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).
- Excellent skills with Solidworks, Inventor, and/or Siemens NX, or other solid modelling software.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 11 -- $76,577. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $97,928. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
