The New College Programs Office seeks a Sessional Instructional Assistant from January 1, 2025 – May 7, 2025 for the following in-person course:

 

JQR360H1: The Canadian Census: Populations, Migrations and Demographics

                                   

JQR360H1 Examines the Canadian population census through the experience of diasporic groups in Canada. Approaches the census as a statistical tool, an historical source and an ideological project of citizenship and nationalism. Uses census data to explore mathematical and statistical concepts and to integrate numerical ways of thinking with qualitative analysis. (Jointly sponsored by African Studies, Diaspora and Transnational Studies, Caribbean Studies, Critical Studies in Equity and Solidarity, and Latin American Studies).

 

Enrolment Estimate: 156 students

Class Schedule: Lectures Thursdays 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. 

Number of Positions: 1 (One) position of 125 hours

Salary: $52.26/hour + 4% vacation pay

              

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to teach quantitative research methods to students with little or no background in statistics (e.g. data analysis in Excel; creating graphs and charts in Excel; basic statistical analysis; and use of demographic surveys in research and policy); and familiarity with history and theory relating to the course required. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

Engagement in research related to the course and previous experience as a student in the course would be an asset.   

 

Responsibilities

  • In-person teaching of skills-based labs on quantitative research methods to support lab assignments in the course, using MS Excel and online databases.  

  • Holding office hours. 

  • Consulting with and attending benchmarking sessions with the Instructor.

  • Advising students about and marking course assignments and labs. 

  • May involve attending lectures.
