Course number and title:  EESB15H3 - Earth History 

Course description:  Planet Earth is at least 4,400 million years old and a geological record exists for at least the last 3,900 million years in the form of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. The changing dynamics of convection deep within the Earth's mantle and associated super-continent assembly and breakup along with meteorite impacts, are now recognized as the major controls on development of the planet's atmosphere, oceans, biology, climate and geo-chemical cycles. This course reviews this long history and the methods and techniques used by geologists to identify ancient environments. 

Estimated course enrolment: 100 

 Number of Hours: 0.5 FCE 

Sessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between September 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025.  

Salary:  Starting September 1, 2025 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,820.70 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,510.04 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,510.4 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,760.23 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,760.23 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,030.34 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto. 

Minimum qualifications:  PhD in Geology, Environmental Earth Science or related field, University teaching experience preferred, familiar with instructional computer technology (i.e., Quercus) Technical and pedagogical competencies in relation to the online delivery of courses would be an asset. Besides knowledge of geological evidence of Earth evolution, knowledge and skills in regard to teaching students basics of mineral, rock and fossil description and identification are required. 

 Past teaching experience is a more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Description of duties:  

Preparation of lectures and practicals, lecturing, creating assignments and exams, creating/conducting and grading virtual field trips, marking, grade management conducting office hours, supervision of TA(s), and participation in the instructor/course evaluation process by students.  

Schedule for the course:  

Lectures: Tuesday 12:00-1:00PM, Wednesday 4:00PM-5:00PM
