Course Number and Title: EESC36H3- Petrology

Course description: This course surveys the processes that produce the chemical and mineralogical diversity of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks including: the distribution, chemical and mineral compositions of rocks of the mantel and crust, their physical properties, and their relation to geological environments. Descriptive petrology for various rocks will also be covered.

Estimated TA support: TA support consistent with enrollment will be provided.

Class schedule: Lectures: Thursdays from 3 -5 pm 

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025

Salary:  Starting September 1, 2025 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,820.70 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,510.04 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,510.4 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,760.23 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,760.23 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,030.34 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term.

Minimum qualifications: PhD in Geology, Environmental Earth Science or related field, University teaching experience preferred, familiar with instructional computer technology (i.e., Quercus) Technical and pedagogical competencies in relation to the online delivery of courses would be an asset. Besides knowledge about igneous and metamorphic rock formation processes, knowledge and skills in regard to teaching the use of a polarizing microscope (virtual thin sections provided) and how to describe and identify igneous and metamorphic rocks in hand sample and thin sections are required.

Preferred qualifications: PhD in Geology, Environmental Earth Science or related field, University teaching experience preferred, familiar with instructional computer technology (i.e., Quercus)

Description of duties: Preparation of synchronous virtual lectures and practicals, lecturing, creating assignments and exams, creating/conducting and grading virtual field trips, marking, grade management, conducting office hours, supervision of TA(s), and participation in the instructor/course evaluation process by students.
