Description:

Course Number and Title: ESS461H1F – Palaeoenvironmental Studies

 

Course description: The use of proxy data (terrestrial and aquatic microfossils) to infer past environmental conditions. The nature and extent of Quaternary environmental change is considered in the context of assessing current issues such as acidification, metal pollution, eutrophication and global climate change. Paleoenvironmental techniques are applied in the laboratory. Distribution Requirements: Science; Breadth Requirements: Living Things and Their Environment (4)

 

Estimated course enrollment: 30

 

Estimated TA support: 50 hours

 

Schedule: Lectures Friday 1-3, Labs Friday 3-6

 

Sessional dates: September 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025  

 

Rate of pay: Stipend for 0.5FCE including vacation pay as of September 1, 2025:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,510.04
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04
Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,760.28

Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $11,030.36

Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences or closely related discipline, knowledge of topic areas. Previous teaching experience at the university level will be a plus.

Description of duties: The lecturer will be responsible for effectively delivering the course with all of the attendant organizational issues of lecture and laboratory preparation and delivery, supervising of teaching assistants, setting, supervision and marking of exams, final course marks, course evaluations, providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling, and so forth. Traditionally, the lecturer also includes one optional field trip to collect a lake sediment record (this is usually done in High Park Grenadier Pond). This course will be cross-listed as a graduate-level course, and the instructor may be required to teach graduate students as well.
