Sessional Lecturer - HIS375H1S Crime and Punishment in the Early Modern World

Course Description:
What did it take to break the law in the period 1400-1800, and how were people prosecuted and punished when they did? We will review the kinds of crimes that triggered arrest, the different types of law codes in place and the importance of the revival of Roman law, ways of avoiding prosecution, the criminalization of “deviance”, judicial processes in colonization, and variations based on age and gender. We’ll also look at forms of punishment, including the varieties of corporal and capital punishment, the operation of prisons, the use of exile and transportation.

Minimum qualifications:
Master of Arts in History or related field required. Mastery of the subject area as related to the course description

Preferred qualifications:
PhD in History preferred. Demonstrated evidence of superior undergraduate teaching.

Description of duties:
Developing syllabus; course preparation; Teaching one two-hour classes weekly, in-person lectures; Marking; Supervision of TA(s) in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 Collective Agreement; Conducting scheduled office hours (1 hour/week)

Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located.

Sessional Dates of Appointment:  January 1, 2026 to April 30, 2026

Estimate of TA Support: 82

Schedule:  Monday 17:00-20:00

Sessional Lecturer I:                           $ 9,820.70
Sessional Lecturer 1, Long term:         $10,510.36
Sessional Lecturer II:                         $10,510.36
Sessional Lecturer II, Long term:        $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III:                        $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III, Long term:       $11,030.36

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
