Course Number and Title: PHL281H1S Bioethics

 

Course Description: An introduction to the study of moral and legal problems in medical practice and in biomedical research; the development of health policy. Topics include: concepts of health and disease, patient rights, informed consent, allocation of scarce resources, euthanasia, abortion, genetic and reproductive technologies, human research, and mental health.

 

Estimated Course Enrolment: 75 students

 

Estimated TA Support: 140 Hours


Class Schedule: Lectures on Thursdays 11:00-13:00; Tutorials on Thursdays 15:00-18:00

 

Sessional Dates of Appointment: January 1st, 2025 - April 30th, 2025


Salary (includes vacation pay): $9,457.89 Sessional Lecturer I; $9,930.79 Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $10,121.77 Sessional Lecturer II; $10,326.62 Sessional Lecture II Long Term; $10,362.76 Sessional Lecturer III; $10,570.02 Sessional Lecturer III Long Term. 

 

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in philosophy (or related); strong academic record and professional promise; ongoing research and scholarly publications in the field; relevant and recent teaching experience. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants who have clearly demonstrated teaching excellence in the subject matter.

 

Description of Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of an online-synchronous university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades and holding office hours and supervising a teaching assistant.
