PLID53H3 - Sentence Processing - Winter 2025

 

Course description: This course focuses on how humans process sentences in real-time. The course is intended for students interested in psycholinguistics above the level of speech perception and lexical processing. The goals of this course are to (i) familiarize students with classic and recent findings in sentence processing research and (ii) give students a hands-on opportunity to conduct an experiment. Topic areas will include, but are not limited to, incrementality, ambiguity resolution, long-distance dependencies, and memory.

Salary: In accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the stipend rate for a half course (Y, F or S), inclusive of vacation pay, will be:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90
Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term: $9,930.79
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Linguistics, Psychology or similar area of study with a focus on psycholinguistics, and ideally language comprehension. Strong academic record and professional promise. Teaching experience in upper-level courses desired.

Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in PLID53H3 or a comparable course, expertise in running formal experiments and the use of statistical software (R, Excel).

 

Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising and marking exams, when relevant. This course will take place in-person at UTSC during the Winter term (Jan - Apr). All positions involve the completion of all course grading.
