GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:
Under general supervision, the incumbent performs a variety of millwright / machinist work in the area of responsibility.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job.  They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated:

  • Sets up, operates and maintains a variety of machines such as lathes, drill presses, punch presses, grinders and other machine shop equipment to fabricate and/or assemble parts to make or repair mechanisms, tools or machines;
  • Prepares working sketches from general descriptions and by examining parts and their surfaces;
  • Lays out, assembles, measures, marks, scribes center lines, dimensions and reference points on work pieces using precision measuring instruments such as scales, calipers, micrometers and electronic measuring devices;
  • Repairs, constructs components and parts, troubleshoots, fits and installs machinery mechanisms;
  • Finishes and fits parts to mechanisms by filing, grinding, scraping and polishing;
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment using micrometers, height gauges, surface plates and gauge blocks.   
  • Tests repaired mechanisms to ensure proper operation and verify machined parts for conformance to specifications;
  • Cleans, checks and lubricates machines, tools and equipment to maintain proper operation;
  • May construct components and parts to close tolerances that may have non-standard or unusual shapes;
  • Other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

 

EDUCATION:  High school graduate.   Must hold a valid Ontario Machinist or Industrial Mechanic Millwright or Tool & Die Maker Certificate of Qualification; working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it pertains to Trade Regulations (industrial & construction), and WHMIS

EXPERIENCE:  Experience working with machines, tools and equipment associated with a Machinist’s duties, competent in welding (tig, mig,arc) and fabricating skills.  Must have mechanical and mathematical aptitude to calculate dimensions and tolerances. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Outlook; Computer knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word is preferred.

OTHER:  Ability to prepare sketches and read and interpret drawings, schematics and specifications; Must have physical ability to perform duties as described; strong problem-solving and customer service skills; tact, diplomacy and discretion; good communication skills (verbal and written) and a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment; ability to keep up-to-date with changing technology and techniques that are congruent to the trade.

 

Note: This is a temporary opportunity lasting approximately 9 months and there are 2 positions available.
