Working under the general direction of the Senior Manager, Maintenance & Carpentry, the Assistant Manager of Maintenance & Stores is responsible for overseeing timely and efficient maintenance services, by defining roles and responsibilities of staff and assigning tasks to staff based on understanding of department/project needs and availability of resources.

 

The Assistant Manager of Maintenance & Stores assists the Senior Manager, Maintenance & Carpentry, Manager, Engineering Operations and the Director of Facilities Management with maintenance renovation projects by: meeting with clients to determine scope of projects and preparing estimates for maintenance services; performing maintenance purchasing, obtaining quotes, and overseeing contractors and the completion of the project work/maintenance activities by contract staff to ensure adherence to quality standards, project/work requirements/specifications, budget and timelines.

 

The Assistant Manager of Maintenance & Stores interprets and administers the Collective Agreement and is responsible for human resources management such as hiring, performance management and terminating unionized staff and to ensure adequate staff are available to meet customer service requirements and operational needs of the work unit and across the campus.

 

Qualifications Required: 

 

I. EDUCATION:

 

Post-secondary degree or certificate in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certificate in property or facilities management is an asset.

 

II. EXPERIENCE:

 

Three (3) years’ progressively responsible experience in providing building maintenance services. Knowledge of the Building Code is an asset. Demonstrated experience managing a large workforce in a unionized environment. Experience interpreting and applying collective agreements and sound knowledge of hazardous chemicals, WHMIS regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act. Experience working with an online work order system and Kronos time and attendance management system are definite assets.

 

III. SKILLS:

 

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.). Excellent oral and written communication skills. Highly developed interpersonal skills and demonstrated strong commitment to providing excellent customer service in a culturally diverse environment. Excellent organizational and planning skills, including planning of work schedules. Skill in developing project specifications. Proven leadership ability.

 

IV. OTHER:

 

Strong knowledge of Ontario Building Code and Health and Safety legislation. Demonstrated asbestos knowledge and awareness. Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines. Detail oriented. Strong analytical skills. Tact, diplomacy and demonstrated ability to deal effectively with clients/staff. Technical aptitude and knowledge of skilled trades. Ability to perform effectively independently and in a team environment. Must have a class “G” driver’s license.
